DVD Review: HOTEL INFERNO (2013)

http://www.necrostorm.com/movies/HotelInferno/Buy.htmlHOTEL INFERNO
Written & Directed by
Produced & Distributed by:  Necrostorm

  If you are a fan of ultra gory splatter fests, then you will definitely want to check on one of the latest films from Necrostorm,  HOTEL INFERNO.  It is advertised as the first splatter movie in first person view.  After watching this film, I sure hope it is not the last!  Here is the basic plot synopsis from the film's imdb.com page:

  The contract killer Frank Zimosa has just been hired for a ridiculously lucrative mission by the rich and powerful Jorge Mistrandia. The objective: to kill a couple of people hiding in one of his European hotels. What would look like one of the simplest jobs Frank has ever had is just about to turn into a living nightmare. He will soon realize he's nothing more than prey for Mistrandia and his army of crazy henchmen that have hiding in the hotel along with an ancient and unstoppable Horror. In their hotels you can only rent rooms....in Hell! See everything through the eyes of the Anti-Hero Frank Zimosa and boost your mind with an overdose of: nonstop violence, adrenaline, and pure fear, surrounded in a mysterious, deep and twisted story. You won't just watch it, you will experience it.

 If you saw this years major theatrical release, HARDCORE HENRY, then you know what to expect going in to this movie in terms of how it is shot.  First person is a pretty common perspective in video games, it was only a matter of time before it came to film!   I have to say, watching a first person action film like HARDCORE HENRY was awesome.   I remember thinking to myself as I watched it, someone should do a horror film this way!   Well, apparently Necrostorm had already done it with this film.   If you've ever seen a Necrostorm film before, then you know to expect some crazy violence with over the top gore.

  As much as I loved HARDCORE HENRY, I have to admit I liked HOTEL INFERNO so much more.  I'm sure I'm biased towards horror, but that's my honest opinion.    While the story can be hard to follow at some points, the film is a visual feast for your eyes.   There is so much going on and so many different fights, from blunt objects to chainsaws to shotguns.    It is a lot of fun and the shotgun scene in the woods looked like you were watching an awesome first person video game.  In fact, as I watched this I remembered thinking how cool a HOTEL INFERNO video game would be!

  This is a film that must be seen to be believed.  It's true that you just don't watch it, you experience it!  Sometimes in the film it felt like you were right there in the action that was happening on screen.  I highly recommend HOTEL INFERNO for any horror film fan.  Check this one out as soon as you can!

  HOTEL INFERNO is available now and contains the following special features:

*  Full Audio Soundtrack
*  Director's Commentary
*  Special FX tutorials
*  Digital FX tutorials
*  4 Screensavers

Blu-ray Review: JUST DESSERTS: THE MAKING OF "CREEPSHOW" (2007)

http://synapse-films.com/dvds/horror/just-desserts-the-making-of-creepshow-special-edition-blu-ray/JUST DESSERTS:  THE MAKING OF "CREEPSHOW"
Directed by
Distributed by  Synapse Films / CAV Distributing

  Rarely does a film's special feature get it's own HD Blu-ray release, but that is just what has happened with JUST DESSERTS:  THE MAKING OF "CREEPSHOW".   After watching it, you can see why.  This is no ordinary "special feature".  Clocking in at 90 minutes, it's a legit feature film itself, that just happens to be about the making of another film.    Here is the basic synopsis of the film from the Synapse Films website:

  In 1982, Author Stephen King and Director George A. Romero collaborated on a feature-film tribute to the controversial EC comics of the 1950s.  Told through five jolting tales of terror, CREEPSHOW has become a celebrated horror classic over the past three decades. With an all-star cast, and featuring groundbreaking special effects by genre legend Tom Savini, CREEPSHOW stands as a horrific and hilarious tribute to the stories that helped influence (and corrupt) a generation of writers and filmmakers.  Now the tales behind the creation of this chilling masterpiece can finally be told!
  Featuring rare behind-the-scenes footage and photographs, JUST DESSERTS: THE MAKING OF “CREEPSHOW” also contains over a dozen interviews, including George A. Romero, Tom Savini, Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins and many others.  These are the terrifying stories behind the film that promised you…“The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have…BEING SCARED!”

  CREEPSHOW has always been one of my favorite horror films of all times.  I love anthology style horror films, and no one has done it better than CREEPSHOW.   George Romero and Stephen King are two masterminds of horror, so a collaboration of those two is bound to be good.   Watching this documentary about the making of the film made me remember just how good CREEPSHOW really is.    I haven't seen it in years,  but after watching JUST DESSERTS, I am really wanting to watch CREEPSHOW again very soon!

  I am a big fan of "making of" documentaries of horror films, and this is probably one of the greatest I have ever seen.   Other than the strange absence of Stephen King, everyone involved with the movie is on hand here to give you first hand accounts about their experience on the film.  My favorite interviewee was Tom Savini, the mastermind behind the effects of the film.  He is my all time favorite effects person, so seeing him on screen talking about this film was truly awesome.

  Along with the interviews, we get to see tons of behind the scenes photos and footage, along with scenes from CREEPSHOW.   The movie is broken up into segments, talking about each entry in the film, along with a beginning section explaining how the film came to be and the influence the old EC comics had on Romero and King, and on the film itself.   I was a huge fan of EC comics growing up, so that's one reason I always loved this film....it is like watching an old VAULT OF HORROR or TALES FROM THE CRYPT come to life onscreen.

  I cannot recommend JUST DESSERTS enough...it is a must have for any fan of CREEPSHOW.   The special edition Blu-ray is available now from Synapse Films and contains the following special features:

*  Audio Commentary with Director & Editor Michael Felsher
*  Audio Commentary featuring interviews with Actor John Amplas, Property Master Bruce Alan Miller, and Make-Up Effects Assistant Darryl Ferrucci
*  Creepshow Days – An interview with Director of Photography Director Michael Gornick
*  Extended Interview Segments with George A. Romero, Tom Savini, and Bernie Wrightson
*  Behind The Screams – A compilation of on-set video footage from Tom Savini
*  Horror’s Hallowed Grounds with Sean Clark
*  Scream Greats Volume One: Tom Savini, Master of Horror Effects with Optional Audio Commentary with Tom Savini
*  Vintage 1982 Evening Magazine Segment shot on the set of the film, featuring rare cast & crew interviews
*  Behind-The-Scenes of CREEPSHOW Photo Gallery

Book Review: SEX AND HORROR: THE ART OF EMANUELE TAGLIETTI

http://www.koreropress.com/sex-and-horror-the-art-of-emanuele-taglietti/SEX AND HORROR:  THE ART OF EMANUELE TAGLIETTI
Published by Korero Press

  If you have never heard of Emanuele Taglietti, don't worry, I hadn't either.  But if you are a fan of horror comics like I am, then it is a name you need to know.   I don't know how I have never heard of Mr. Taglietti, but I am glad that I have finally made acquaintance with his amazingly beautiful artwork!    Luckily we don't have to go round up all his comic book art to look at, as Korero Press has compiled some of his greatest works into this beautiful coffee table art book.   Here is a description of the book from the Korero Press website:

In the late 1970s and early ’80s Italy became crazy about the 'fumetti sexy', a home-grown style of erotic comics that subverted every genre with its own brand of twisted humour, violence, and up-front sensuality. Wilder and weirder than you can imagine, they were some of the most outrageous and shocking comics ever produced – most wouldn't be allowed today. These weren’t underground comics: they were totally mass market and their highly erotic covers were seen on every news stand and kiosk across the country. At their peak leading publishers were releasing a new 100-page comic every few days, with artists having to draw 150 to 200 pages a month. In the late 1980s, the advent of video and the global mono-culture of international media companies brought it all to an end. However, the work of one of the leading fumetti cover artists, Emanuele Taglietti, remains highly collectable and has been brought together for the first time in this book, providing a long-overdue look at this forgotten genre.

  This is one of the most beautiful comic art books I have ever seen.  It is a nice, thick book clocking in at 160 pages, all in full color.  Along with each painting that is seen here, there is a brief description telling you the title of the comic it was from, the issue number, and the publication month and year.  Some of the more popular comics have a brief description telling you what the general plot of the comic was.  The book also has a small section at the front that gives some brief biographical info on Mr. Taglietti.

Book Review: THE ED GEIN FILE: A PSYCHO'S CONFESSION AND CASE DOCUMENTS by John Borowski

http://johnborowski.com/THE ED GEIN FILE:  A PSYCHO'S CONFESSION AND CASE DOCUMENTS
Produced & Edited by  John Borowski

 I have always been a fan of True Crime, and especially stories of serial killers.  I guess they are just so far from what I consider "normal" that they fascinate me.  I just can't fathom how someone could take another person's life, let alone multiple lives.  And it's usually done with little to no remorse.  There are some crazy killers out there throughout history, but none have a story quite like that of Plainfield, Wisconsin's own Ed Gein.

  Ed Gein was had a very bizarre fascination with his Mother, to the point of not being able to let her go once she died.  He dug up her body and kept her corpse on her bed, basically making an alter to his Mom.  He also killed a couple of other people from the small town he lived in, and desecrated numerous graves, stealing and using body parts from the deceased.   Ed's most gruesome murder was that of a lady named Bernice Worden, a local hardware store employee who was found hanging in Ed's shed, strung up like a deer that had just been killed.   After Bernice went missing, the body was eventually found at Ed's farm, along with all the other "things" he had collected.  He had organs on the stove and fridge, in preparation for consumption.  He also had lampshades and furniture made from human skin.   Ed Gein's case was so bizarre that many Hollywood films have been based (although some very loosely) on Ed Gein.

  Now, if you want to ready more about the details and specifics on his life and crimes, there are many books out there you can find on this subject.   But...if you're already familiar with the story, then you need to pick up THE ED GEIN FILE by John Borowski to delve much deeper into the Ed Gein case.   This book is a truly amazing reference to have.   The amount of research that must have gone into this book in astounding.    The main component of the book is a transcription of the complete interrogation of Mr. Gein, complete with his confession.  It's completely eerie to actually read all of Gein's own words, I could hear them in his voice as I was reading them.    While this is the main bulk of the book, there are so many other great items in this book including the complete physical and psychological profile of Ed Gein, the official autopsy report of Bernice Worden, a copy of Gein's death certificate, multiple newspaper clippings of articles related to the Ed Gein case,  and some great illustrations and photos of Ed Gein.    You might read about some of these items in other books about Gein, but in this book you get to see the actual item itself.

  THE ED GEIN FILE:  A PSYCHO'S CONFESSION AND CASE DOCUMENTS is a must have for any fans of true crime and/or the Ed Gein story.    The book is available now on Amazon.com.

Blu-ray Review: MICROWAVE MASSACRE (1983)

http://mvdb2b.com/s/MicrowaveMassacreBlurayDVD/AV062MICROWAVE MASSACRE
Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment Group

  Finally!  I have always heard of MICROWAVE MASSACRE, but trying to get my hands on a copy of it was extremely hard to do!  The DVD was out of print for a long time, so copies were extremely pricey.  Luckily, the great folks at Arrow Video have released this film on an amazing Blu-ray/DVD combo pack!    For those not familiar with the film, here is the basic plot from the MVD website:

 THEY CAME FOR DINNER...TO FIND THEY WERE IT!! Microwave Massacre stars legendary stand-up comedian and actor Jackie Vernon as Donald, a disgruntled construction worker whose wife's predilection for haute cuisine drives him to cannibalism. Donald unwittingly stumbles upon a solution to his two major problems in his life - his nagging wife and his lack of tasty meals - when, one night, he bludgeons his better half to death with a pepper grinder in a drunken rage. Thinking on his feet, Donald dismembers the body and sets about microwaving the remains, which turn out to be rather delicious. Trouble is, now he's got a taste for human flesh that needs satisfying... Eschewing all notions of good taste, Wayne Berwick's Microwave Massacre is a deliciously depraved exercise in political incorrectness that has gone on to gain a cult following thanks to a characteristically deadpan performance from lead Vernon, who delivers such choice lines as "I'm so hungry I could eat a whore". Vegetarians need not apply!

  Now I must warn you, the cover of the old DVD release touted this film as "The worst horror movie ever made".   So going into this film, I was kind of expecting a "so bad, it's good" type of experience.  Well, I am proud to say that is exactly what I got.   I would definitely not consider this the worst horror movie ever made, I have seen far worse for sure!  That being said, it was pretty bad over all, but it was also extremely fun and  full of character. The dialog is pretty cheesy, and the blood/gore is pretty fake looking, but that is all part of the charm that this film displays.

The film reminded me of a cross between a Troma film and a Herschell Gordon Lewis film.  If you are fans of those type of movies, you will love this one.   This movie was so much fun, I definitely see myself watching it again in the near future.  This is a must have for cheesy B-grade (or maybe even C-grade) horror!

 MICROWAVE MASSACRE will be available on 8/16 and will contain the following special features:

*  Brand new 2K restoration of the original camera negative
*  High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations
*  Original Mono audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)
*  Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

*  Brand new making-of featurette including interviews with Muckler, director Wayne Berwick and actor Loren Schein
*  Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork to be revealed
*  First pressing only: fully-illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Nightmare USA author Stephen Thrower

Blu-ray Review: THE STUFF (1985)

http://mvdb2b.com/s/TheStuff/AV050THE STUFF
Written & Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment Group

  There are quite a few horror films I remember fondly from my childhood, and THE STUFF is one of those for sure!  The film came out when I was 9 years old, but I probably didn't see it until a few years after that.  I remember seeing it at a sleepover at a kid's house who had HBO!  That was a big deal back then, as not as many homes had HBO as they do today.   THE STUFF was coming on and we all quietly gathered around to watch it, knowing we would get in trouble if his parents came out of their room for any reason and saw us.  Luckily they didn't, so I got to see the entire film, and luckily Arrow Video has released this classic on a beautiful Blu-ray edition so I can enjoy it for years to come, and even introduce my kids to it someday!  Here is the basic plot if you're not familiar with the film courtesy of the MVD website:

  Are you eating it ...or is it eating you? The Stuff is the new dessert taking supermarket shelves by storm. It's delicious, low in calories and - better still - doesn't stain the family carpet... What's not to like?! Well, for a start it has a life of its own, and we're not talking friendly live bacteria... Young Jason seems to be the only one who doesn't love The Stuff - in fact he won't go anywhere near it, after having seen the pudding crawling around the fridge one night. What's more, everyone who eats The Stuff has started acting really weird... Now, teaming up with wise-cracking industrial saboteur "Mo", Jason must put a stop to The Stuff and the organization behind it or face a gooey, gloopy demise. Coming courtesy of horror auteur Larry Cohen (director of the It's Alive series and scribe behind the Maniac Cop trilogy), The Stuff is a titillating treat for the taste-buds which blends elements of films such as Street Trash with the straight-up B-movie flavor of The Blob. So grab a spoon and dig on into The Stuff - the taste that delivers... much more than you bargained for!

  This is one of my favorite horror films for sure.  It might be considered toward the cheesy side by todays standards, but it still holds up pretty good overall.  The concept is very cool, and pretty original I believe.    While the acting is pretty bad overall, the movie more than makes up for that with the awesome story line (albeit with a few plot holes) and some great effects.

  One scene in particular reminded me a lot of 1982's THE THING.  A man's head (played by the great Garrett Morris) has his head stretched and ripped open by The Stuff.  Being from the 80's, the film is all practical effects which is always a plus.   80's horror films have such a unique quality to them, it's hard to put my finger on, but you know them when you see them.  This is as perfect example of a great 80's horror film and one every horror fan needs to have in their collection!

  As always, Arrow Video has done a remarkable job with both the restoration and extras of the film, as well as the amazing packaging of the film.  This Blu-ray is available now and contains the following Special Features:

*  New High Definition restoration of the film from a brand new 2K scan of the original camera negative
*  Original stereo 1.0 uncompressed PCM Mono audio
*  Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
*  "Can't Get Enough of The Stuff: Making Larry Cohen's Classic Creature Feature" - Documentary featuring Larry Cohen, producer Paul Kurta, actress Andrea Marcovicci, Steve Neill (mechanical makeup effects) and Kim Newman
*  Introduction and trailer commentary by director and The Stuff fan Darren Bousman (Saw II, Saw III)
*  Original Trailer
*  Reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork by Gary Pullin
*  Collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Joel Harley, illustrated with original stills and promotional materials

DVD Review: MY MASTER SATAN: 3 TALES OF DRUG FUELED VIOLENCE (2016)

http://www.storenvy.com/products/17146539-my-master-satan-3-tales-of-drug-fueled-violence-dvdMY MASTER SATAN:  3 TALES OF DRUG FUELED VIOLENCE
Written & Directed by:

  Let me start off my saying this is not the type of film I would normally review.  I am not a fan of Satan at all, and [as a Christian] I in no way promote the glorification of Satan or devil worship.  What I do support is independent filmmakers, no matter what the subject matter (to an extent).   This is true independent horror, self distributed by the filmmaker through his store envy site.  This is underground filmmaking at it's extreme.  Before I go any further, here is the plot synopsis from the film's IMDB.com page:

  My Master Satan: 3 Tales of Drug Fueled Violence is an anthology horror film that features three tales that revolve around serial killer/druggie Alister (Dakota Bailey) & his equally demented serial killer friends Woody, Charlie and Bubba & takes the viewer deep into a seedy underworld of crime, drugs, depravity & murder. In the first tale, Bubba (Matt Marshall) enlists Alister's help to exhume the corpse of his deceased unfaithful wife who he murdered. Afterwards the two of them decide to take some LSD resulting in an acid trip where they briefly see Satan.
  The second tale follows Alister and his twisted friend Charlie (Brian Knapp) as they go out at night committing murder, & other deviant acts.
  Finally in the third and final tale, Alister & Bubba go on a quest for more LSD, meeting their serial killer friend Woody and committing violent acts along the way, and finally having the ultimate ritualistic acid trip that once again brings them face to face with Satan himself.

  If you are a fan of underground, raw, violent cinema, this film will be right up your alley!  Think AUGUST UNDERGROUND TRILOGY or AMERIKAN HOLOKAUST.  These are films that  MY MASTER SATAN reminded me of.   The film was shot over 20015-2016, but it was shot with what looks like a VHS recorder and was made to look older and very rough.  This is intentional for sure, and definitely adds to the gritty feel of the film.   There are some great effects, although quite a few are cutaway scenes, but still effective.  The intentionally bad film/sound quality make this film feel very real, which makes for a very disturbing viewing experience!

  Hardcore underground film lovers should give this one a shot for sure.   DVDs are on sale now for only $5.99 + shipping!
